The Hyperspace Acoustic
I was first introduced to the concept of no-input mixing in the summer of 2016. At the time, it registered as little more than an interesting novelty, and it was more than a year before it crossed my horizon once again. In that time, fundamental ideas had been fomenting in my musical expression, setting the stage for a quasi religious moment upon my second introduction to the instrument. I could hardly believe the extent to which a 14-channel Mackie analog mixer embodied my highest aspirations for the creation and manipulation of sound: a perfect union of deterministic mathematics and unpredictable chaos, 100% of each. The Hyperspace Acoustic is an ongoing series of musical experiments performed on this instrument.
